Healthy Eating and Active Living Classes

Project Strength- This is a Harvesters Community Food Network program. It is an eight-week, group course that meets for two-hours at CCHW per class, including one hour of nutrition and food safety education and one hour of healthy meal preparation in a friendly, relaxed setting. A bag of healthy foods is provided to each participant after each class. (See calendar for scheduled classes)

Eat Smart Be Active-University of Missouri-Extension Family Nutrition Program- 6-week class that meets once a week for an hour. Information about nutrition, cooking, physical activity, food safety, and cooking on a budget.  Interactive lessons focus on simple messages related to food preparation, nutrition, and feeding a family. Participants who attend at least 6 classes receive a certificate and a cookbook.(see calendar for scheduled classes)

Eating from the Garden University of Missouri-Extension Family Nutrition Program- 6-week class that meets once a week for 90 minutes.  Lessons focus on physical activity and nutrition as well as planning a garden, planting seeds and plants, growing & harvesting produce, and preparing healthy meals. Classes spend half of the session in the community garden and the other half in the kitchen preparing food from the harvest. .(see calendar for scheduled classes) 

Kids in the Kitchen – University of Missouri-Extension Family Nutrition Program- 6-week class that meets once a week for 90 minutes. .(see calendar for scheduled classes)

Diabetes Classes

DEEP This group class (1.5 hours/class weekly for 6 weeks) uses the Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP) curriculum developed by the University of Illinois, Chicago. We use it to teach adults and seniors how to self-manage their diabetes. It is facilitated by a certified, trained lay leader who self-manages her own diabetes and lives in the neighborhood. .(see calendar for scheduled classes)

Gateway This group class (1.5 hours/class weekly for 6 weeks) is a less-scripted community conversation about diabetes.
